His father told him he could not have a car at 17. While his dad was away on business, Les bought this car for $75. His dad returned, saw the car and didn't mention it for three days. Then he told Novella, "looks like Les got a pretty good deal." Later, a turkey flew up and perched on the rag top. Les threw a wrench at the turkey, breaking its leg. They had thanksgiving dinner early. (from note on back of photo) |

1.Les & Joe Dunn. They formed a band called the Oklahoma Nightriders and played on an experimental TV station in Bakersfield in 1934. 2. Les after arriving in Bakersfield. He leased a farm and began raising cotton in 1934 at the age of 22. 3. A portrait of Les taken just before he met his wife to be in 1935. |
